Meet Athena-From Bothell, Washington

Miss Fairy Tale Princess

Athena was nominated for our Fairy Tale Princess photo shoot at Ruth and Kate Portraits by her grandmother.   We did the photoshoot at the Seattle Arboretum See her a touching video of her photography session below.

After her birth Athena was diagnosed with Hydranencephaly– “No brain, only brain stem”. The outcome for children with this disorder is still birth, or if by a miracle they survive birth, they would be a vegetable on a breathing tube and feeding tube for their short existence.

It was like being hit by lighting, only 1- 500,000 babies are diagnosed with this. The doctor told us that Amber could legally opt to induce herself early, knowing the baby wouldn’t survive. The doctor then had her meet with a grievance counselor. She had Amber hold a silicone baby, the size of an orange, and said, “This is the size of your baby currently. When you give birth to her this is how big she will be.”

Athena was born 3 weeks early Via C- Section at the University of Washington. The doctors warned her that she may be still born, or not breath once born. When the doctors pulled her out of Amber’s tummy, she cried instantly and peed on the doctors. She did not need any breathing assistance, which was a miracle on its own. When she was 1 day old, she was transferred to Children’s hospital, and had brain surgery at 3 days old to place her VP shunt.

Since Athena Birth, she has had spinal surgery, corrective eye surgery, and 2 seizures. She is delayed in her gross and fine motor skills, and uses a walker to walk. Regardless of her challenges, Athena is the happiest, loving and most sassy 5 year old you will meet. She has a photographic memory, remembering everyone’s name after meeting them once. She can recite her books, after having them read to her once. She knows her Alphabet, can count to 20, and can spell and read her name.

I could not be happier with her progress and I am so incredibly proud of the little girl she has become. I am thankful that Amber went against the doctor’s recommendation. This journey has made us all realize that doctors are not always right. The brain and the spirit is a magical thing. Prayer works, and having perseverance and faith, will always get you through a difficult time, allowing you to make decisions even when you don’t know the right answer. From this we always put it in God’s hands.

Meet Blake R- Maple Valley, Washington

Blake the Superhero

Blake is a happy 6 year old who is obsessed with sharks, superheroes and Star Wars. Upon first meeting him, you would never guess that he has a terminal rare disease. But on a closer look you would see that he has bruises all over his arms and legs, he gets tired quickly and is smaller than the rest of the kids his age. Just before age 2, Blake was diagnosed with a very rare genetic disease called Fanconi anemia, FA. Fanconi anemia is primarily a blood disease that may lead to bone marrow failure (aplastic anemia), leukemia, and/or solid tumors. FA can affect all systems of the body. FA patients are extremely likely to develop a variety of cancers and at a much earlier age than patients in the general population. Earlier this year, Blake was inpatient at Seattle Children’s Hospital for 40+ days for a bone marrow transplant. He endured 7 days of chemo and received new cells from an anonymous donor. This process wasn’t easy and Blake is still recovering, he will be in isolation until next year while his new immune system grows and strengthens. Through this whole process Blake has been so brave. He is a true superhero.

Izzy and Tari Renton Portrait Session

Why pets should be in your family portrait!

If you’re anything like us, your pets are part of your family. You count on them for support, you’re there for them when they need you, and you’d do anything for them. Therefore, why wouldn’t you choose to include your pets in your professional family portrait sessions? We know they mean the world to you and so bring them and let us capture their love for you in a perfect portrait session.

Meet Tari and her beautiful German Shepherd Izzy. We did their portrait session at our Renton, Washington studio. Izzy was the perfect model. Kate has known Izzy and Tari for about 6 months. When she found out they were leaving our beautiful Washington state and moving to Miami, Florida.  She insisted to commemorate their beautiful relationship. And we believe the portraits show the true love between these two.

 Portraits for Best Friends

Fairy Portraits in Renton | Washington

Fairy Chloe has been in our studio in Renton, Washington many times.  We love to photograph her.  This time she brought her best friend Avery. Such wonderful fairies.  These special dresses come from Love Baby J and we love all her dresses.  Avery and Chloe had so much fun dressing up and twirling around in the studio.  Watching them as they looked at their images during our ordering session was so much fun.  They could imagine the magic the was going to happen while they munched happily on popcorn with Avery’s older brother.  Preston was such a trooper as the girls didn’t want a “boy” to watch them.  He went upstairs into our viewing room and was quite the gentlman.

We love it when friends come to the studio to be photographed together.  They met at a McDonalds playland!!!  Wouldn’t it be nice if we could meet our friends at a playland too?

Double The Fun-Sister Images-Covington Childrens Portraits

We have loved watching Sapphire and Azazebelle grow up from tiny fairies to little girl fairies.  Now that big sis Sapphire is getting bigger she is learning to ride horses and maybe, just maybe one day she will find a unicorn to ride!  Azazebelle, quite the dancer, kept us on our toes in the studio because she loved to flutter around like a litte butterfly.  This family is always a joy to photograph and have become such good friends to us!  We are glad to be your “forever photographers and putting your dreams into print.”  And thank you Nickole for these kind words:

“Ruth and Kate both work so very well with my girls. They are patient and loving. They take the time in
finding out exactly what I would like from the session and they are truly creative in the way they set
their scenes/themes. They continue to exceed my expectations with the way the photos turn out. They
are beyond what I could imagine. Their attention to details from their custom dresses, bows to even the
little gifts they give out in correlation to the theme is astonishing.

Story Book Portraits – Kent

Fairy Aileigh has been coming to us for a few years and we adore her.  One day she says she is going to go to South Dakota because she wants to see Mt. Rushmore!  But she will have to wait for her fairy wings to get a little stronger.  She asked her mom for another fairy shoot and this year she chose a pink Doll Cake dress to wear.  Portrait sessions do require some advanced planning!  Her mom said “I always have such a hard time selecting photos which is great.”

Family Portraits Matter

Outdoor locations are beautiful

When I tell people I’m a photographer I always hear… “oh do you do family portraits?  We really need family pictures.  We haven’t taken them for years”  I ask why?  The reasons are all the same “Oh we don’t have time”, “I need to lose 10 pounds”, “my kids just won’t sit still long enough” or “my husband……..fill in the blanks”

What ever the reason, we are here to help you navigate all those problems.

Following are 3 reasons family portraits are important.

1. Your life will not look like this next year

Families are never the same; they’re always growing and changing. This is one of the reasons why we truly love being photographers. It is important today to preserve and honor your family.  In today’s digital world, there’s something special about a printed portrait. While cellphone images are often forgotten or easily deleted, quality wall portraits displayed throughout your home shows that your family is a priority.

2. Creating memories through portraiture

Life is hectic and sometimes complicated.  As you travel through the different stages/struggles with your family you can always look at your family portrait and remember that smile, giggle, or how much that child loved that dress that she wore. When it comes to the love of your family, there is certainly nothing more important than being able to look back and remembering the bond and excitement that you share with one another.

3. Family portraits are an investment.

In life, you chose where you invest. Your family is always the best investment. When you invest in quality portraiture you are investing in something that will be valuable for a lifetime.

Let us help you tell your story either in the studio or on location we would love to discuss your ideas.

Ruth and Kate Portraits Travel

Utah Ice Princess Photography

Every once in awhile the opportunity comes up for us to photograph things just for us.  Kate was able to travel to Utah to photograph in the ice caves near Salt Lake City.  It was selected to be featured in Sureal Beauty Magazine.  While we do love to photographing children, it is so much fun to let our creativity go wild.

Carousal Horse at Clark Lake

Sometimes you have to put a little fun into your photo sessions with Ruth and Kate Portaits.  We’ll do what it takes to make our customers feel comfortable and smile.  Really… it is just our personaility. Portrait sessions should be fun and relaxed and with children you need to be able to relate to them.  We love to use this horse in our photography sessions.

Poor Sydney!!!  I accidently poked her in the eye while posing them…  She was so good about it!  At least is wasn’t my ring.  My kids call it the ring of death but it is sharp and pointy.  Thanks Sydney for being such a good sport about it.
